Earthrise Pictures was conceived by CEO and founder Chris Godwin in the Spring of 2007 and officially incorporated in 2009 with partner and President Josh Dinner. Its name is a reference to a famous photograph taken by astronaut William Anders on Christmas Eve 1968 while orbiting the Moon during the Apollo 8 mission.
It depicts the planet Earth hovering above the cold and desolate lunar surface far in the distance and it was the first time Earth had been photographed at a distance of over half a million miles.
The image invokes a profound idea: that everyone and everything you have ever known resides on a small blue dot, alone in the vastness of space. It is a reminder that we on this Earth are one people, seeking common goals of happiness and prosperity. We deserve each other’s respect and support even when we are divided by politics or nationality.
It is our responsibility to depart from the old divisions and rise up to find positive solutions in a bright new world, our eyes wide open.
Our mission is to produce media and films with urgency and commitment towards these principles, and have them guide our creative ingenuity as our company continues to grow and evolve.
This sense of responsibility towards others is the genesis for the Personal History Project, our primary production activity, which makes the power of recorded media available to individuals wishing to preserve their life stories for their descendants.
